Sapphires that are free of visible inclusions are actually quite rare and highly valued. Nearly all sapphires have some type of inclusions visible under 10x magnification. A sapphire can be cut as a calibrated stone but this is rare since a large amount of gem material is lost in the process. Due to the value of the gem material, most sapphires are cut with a step cut, which can be used to preserve the weight and increase the value of the gem.

Of course, size does matter. Sapphires over 2 carats are considered rare and gemstones over 10 carats in size are considered ‘important’. The value of the sapphire does not increase in a linear fashion with carat weight. For example, a 3 carat sapphire can easily be valued at well over 3 times the cost of a 1 carat sapphire.
The most common treatment for sapphire is heating and nearly all sapphires used in jewelry are heated. Sapphires that are unheated are more rare and do have a higher value.

The origin of a sapphire has some effect on the value but not as much as the other characteristics. A very fine quality gem (cut, color, clarity, carat, treatment) from Sri Lanka is valued just as high as the same quality from Madagascar, for example.
When selecting a sapphire, the first thing that you will notice is of course the color. That’s why it has the most impact on the value. Look for the color that you are drawn to, then begin to weigh all of the other considerations. Natural, mined sapphires are all different and all unique. So keep in mind that it may be difficult to find one that has each and every one of the features on your wish list.

Sapphire Attributes and How They Influence a Sapphire’s Value Incredible Untreated Emerald Cut Blue Sapphire Radiant Cut Nature Green Sapphire Just as with a diamond, a ѕаррhirе’ѕ color, cut, сlаritу, and carat weight influence the value of the individual gem.
