About Cultured Tahitian Pearls: also known as South Sea Cultured Pearls, come in a range of natural colors from gold to gray, blue and black with hues of rose, lilac and green. The natural color of the Cultured Tahitian Pearl comes from the special mix of minerals only found in the pristine waters around the Tahitian Islands.
Did you know that one of the earliest known methods to enhance a Cultured Pearl's color required that a chicken eat the Cultured Pearl for breakfast? Around 400 A.D., it was believed that a chicken's digestive system would soften the Cultured Pearl's blemishes and even the color.
Today, Cultured Tahitian Pearls used in fine jewelry are cultured. Humans assist the oyster in creating a Cultured Pearl by inserting a tiny sphere of natural material (called a nucleus) into its shell. The oyster surrounds the sphere with nacre coating. This process typically takes approximately two years.
